Orlando: October 3-4, 1997

The City of Orlando hosted the first Florida Neighborhoods Conference in 1997, which was modeled on both the National Neighborhoods USA(NUSA) Conference and the city of Orlando’s local neighborhoods conferences, which it had conducted for the previous six years for its neighborhood leaders. A state planning committee was organized with representatives from 13 municipal or county governments, including the three NUSA board members. The City of Orlando staff and volunteers planned and coordinated the conference. The Orlando conference attracted 500 Florida neighbors who met to attend 21 workshops and participate in eight neighborhood tours. Evaluation results from the attendees indicated strong support for making the Florida Neighborhoods Conference and annual event.
